South Carolina is a southeastern U.S. state known for its shoreline of subtropical beaches and marshlike sea islands. South Carolina borders North Carolina to the north, Georgia on the southwest, Atlantic Ocean on the southeast. The state capital of South Caroline is Columbia which is located in the central area of the state. Columbia is also the biggest city in South Carolina.
The English settled in South Carolina in 1670 and South Carolina had a wealthy and influential colonial economy which is based on plantation agriculture that relied on black slaves. By 1730, people of African ancestry made up over two-third of the state's population.
The plantation system had grew from the coastal lowlands to the inland areas by the early 19th century and the new state became a part of the Cotten Belt.
During the American Civil War (1861 to 1865), South Carolina's economy was devastated and suffered severeconomical, social and political turmoil for the next century. The mid 20th century however brought major opportunities and as South Carolina's economy industrialised, urbanisation grew and civil rights movement swept acorss the entire South Carolina.
